Privacy policy
Effective October 4, 2026
The short version
- GoodWiFi has no accounts. Your places, floor plans, readings and room names are stored on your phone.
- The camera is used only to work out where you are while you walk. No photos, video or audio are saved.
- The app has no ads and no analytics or tracking tools.
- What leaves your phone is network test traffic (pings and speed tests) and, if you buy or restore GoodWiFi Home or Pro, the purchase check.
This policy covers the GoodWiFi app for iPhone, iPad and Android and the website goodwifi.app. “We” means Tensor LLC, the maker of GoodWiFi.
Permissions and what each one is for
GoodWiFi asks for each permission the first time it’s needed. If you say no, that feature turns off and the rest of the app keeps working.
| Permission | What GoodWiFi does with it |
|---|---|
| Camera | Tracks where your phone is as you walk (Apple ARKit on iPhone, Google ARCore on Android), so each reading lands in the right place on the map. Camera frames are processed on the phone and are not saved or sent anywhere. The preview on screen is deliberately blurred (iPhone) or frosted (Android) so faces and text can’t be read. |
| Motion and fitness | Counts steps and reads the compass and air-pressure sensor, to follow you when the camera can’t see and to notice when you change floors. Processed on the phone. |
| Location (while using the app) | Apple and Google require location permission before an app can read the name of your Wi-Fi network and the identifier of the access point you’re connected to. GoodWiFi uses it only for that. It does not read or store your GPS position. |
| Local network (iPhone) | Measures how quickly your router responds. |
| Photos | Only if you choose to add a floor-plan image. The image you pick is copied into the app’s storage on your phone. GoodWiFi doesn’t access the rest of your library. |
| Microphone and speech recognition | Only if you hold “Name this room” to say a room’s name. Speech is recognized on the phone (on-device recognition is required), and the audio is not kept. |
| Nearby Wi-Fi scan (Android) | On Android, GoodWiFi scans for access points during a survey to show signal strength across a mesh. Only access points of the network you’re connected to are stored; other networks, such as your neighbors’, are discarded when the scan comes in. |
What is stored on your phone
- The places and floors you create, and any floor-plan images you add.
- Survey readings: router and internet response times, lost packets, dropouts, speed-test results, and where on the floor each was taken.
- Room names you give, and names you give your access points, with the access points’ hardware identifiers (BSSIDs).
- On iPhones and iPads with LiDAR: the outline of walls, doors, windows and openings from a floor scan (Apple RoomPlan), and an Apple AR map file used to line up later surveys with the same floor. These contain geometry and tracking points, not photos.
- Each survey’s device model, platform and app version, so results can be interpreted correctly.
This data stays on your phone. It may be included in your phone’s own backups (for example iCloud or Google backups), which are governed by Apple’s or Google’s terms.
What leaves your phone
Network tests
- Pings. During a survey GoodWiFi sends small test packets about once a second to your router and to Cloudflare’s public DNS address (1.1.1.1), to measure response time and lost packets.
- Speed tests. When you tap Speed test, the app downloads and uploads test data to Cloudflare’s speed-test service (speed.cloudflare.com). Like any internet server, Cloudflare sees your IP address, and Cloudflare says it uses speed-test measurements to produce aggregate statistics about internet quality. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
- Backup speed-test server. If Cloudflare’s test fails, the app can retry against our own speed-test server at api.goodwifi.app. That server logs, for each test, your IP address, the time, which test ran, its status, the number of bytes, and how long it took. We use these logs to keep the service running and to limit abuse. We keep them for up to 30 days.
Test data contains no information about you or your home; it is random bytes.
Purchases
GoodWiFi Home and Pro are bought through the App Store or Google Play, which handle payment. We use RevenueCat to check what you have bought. When the app starts, and when you buy or restore, RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID, your purchase receipts, and basic device and app information. We never see your payment details. See RevenueCat’s privacy policy.
Reports you share
PDF reports and spreadsheets are created on your phone. They leave it only when you share them yourself, through your phone’s share sheet, to the app or person you choose.
What we don’t do
- We don’t have accounts and don’t ask for your name, email or address.
- We don’t use advertising, analytics, or crash-reporting tools in the app.
- We don’t save camera images, video or audio.
- We don’t collect your GPS location.
- We don’t sell or share personal information.
Deleting your data
Deleting a place, floor or survey removes it from the app; removing or rescanning a scanned floor map deletes its scan files. To erase everything GoodWiFi has stored, delete the app from your phone. Because we hold no account data, there is nothing for us to delete on our side apart from the speed-test server logs described above, which expire on their own.
The website
goodwifi.app is a static website. It uses no cookies, analytics or tracking scripts. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, page requested and browser type) for security and operations.
Children
GoodWiFi is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example in California or the EU), you may have rights to access or delete personal information about you. Since almost everything stays on your phone, you control it directly. For anything else, contact us below.
Changes
If we change how GoodWiFi handles data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
